Regarding the Unrelated Acts of Violence in the Central Highlands

June 11, 2023

Bangkok – Today, the group “Montagnard Stand For Justice” has come across a news report on TTXVN/Vietnam+ stating that a group of individuals has carried out an armed attack causing casualties among officials and civilians in Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak province. While we have not been able to verify the authenticity of this report, we feel the need to issue this press release to affirm the following:

  1. Montagnard Stand For Justice is not affiliated with any group or individual inciting, promoting, conspiring, or assisting in the use of violence for any purpose.
  2. Our group advocates for peaceful activities by promoting religious freedom through close cooperation with the international community, including the United Nations and governments of democratic countries.
  3. We are concerned that any armed uprising will hinder the progress of our peaceful advocacy efforts, as exemplified by the following situations:

a) The international community may become more cautious in cooperating or supporting our peaceful initiatives if they have concerns about our peaceful approach.

b) The Vietnamese government may exploit similar incidents as justification for its longstanding policy of suppressing independent religious groups.

We take this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to continue advocating for religious freedom based on international conventions and Vietnamese law.
